This is a great route but you have missed out the best road in the area. Please don't take my word for it try it.The road is the B4358 between Beulah and Newbridge on Wye. You can do the route from either direction from the A470 at Newbridge or off the A483 at Beulah. This is a real swooping bendy road with crests dips and nothing to really catch the rider out. The only problem is that its only 8 miles long.If you can build it into your ride from either Llandovery cafe on to the A483 then hang a left at Beulah or from Crossgates cafe onto the A470 then right at Newbridge. It doesn't even look twisty on a map so it comes as a pleasant surprise. I bet i lot will reach the end turn round and do it in the the direction. It truly is brilliant.
I have often used this road to get to the annual Builth Wells motorcycle show, on those years when the police haven arbitrarily decided to cancel it without justification, and on those weekends there are guaranteed to be revenue raising camera vans somewhere along the route. For the rest of the time, this road is great. The road surface is a little ropey in places, there are a couple of spectacularly nasty and challenging bends along the route, just waiting to catch out the unwary, and the odd blind junction. As always in rural idylls like this, watch out for tractors and farm machinery, not to mention the ubiquitous summer shed-draggers. Anyway, a fine ride.
Lovely ride well worth the mile just to get to it nothing better than a sunny day to ride it nice corners good road surface and not much traffic and a nice view as well. Well worth the trip out
Fast and open from Builth to Llanwrtyd then it opens to spectacular valley Viwe from the top of sugar loaf into some narrow and windy forested road that was completly rebuilt in 2006. At the foot of the mouintain Cynghordy there is a positive cambered tight left hander leading to some narrow and exciting chicane style complex finishing the ride into Llandovery along a flat open straight. There is a very tight left CAUTION!!!.Good both ways
After a Bacon butty and mug of tea at the West-End cafe in Llandovery, trace your way along the unclassifieds to the Llyn Brianne Reservoir in the Cambrian Mountains, the locals know this area as "Little Switzerland". Not a bad part of Wales and it's a pretty little route with some nice scenery thrown in. It's by no means a quick route as it's very very narrow in places with some awkward bends and blind crests. If you're into taking it easy and just admiring the scenery then you will enjoy it. It's not one you'd be keen to return to if you're into faster, more flowing roads, but it does have it's good points. Take it easy and ride it carefully as you'll probably lose your signal on the mobile, so it's not the best place in the world to break down! You could head towards Tregaron and the 'Devil's Bridge' from the reservoir or do as I did and return south via Abergwesyn and Beulah. You're also not far from 'Llanddewi Brefi', where you can be 'The only gay in the village', if that's your thing lol. A couple of SNAPS here for your enjoyment. Check out the 'Dogs Ears' that my lads is sporting, they got a lot of laughs on our Spanish trip, and the Welsh sheep kept well away lol. There are lots of great roads in this area and lots of nice places too. You're only a short blat away from the Elan Valley which is definitely worth a visit. Why not combine the two for a good day out?
